William Tong

William Tong serves as the 25th Attorney General of Connecticut, first taking office in 2019 and now in his second term. He is a recognized national leader in major multistate investigations and lawsuits addressing corporate accountability, consumer protection, and public safety. His work has targeted opioid manufacturers, social media companies, and corporations responsible for privacy violations and environmental harm.

William graduated from Phillips Academy Andover before earning his undergraduate degree in classics with honors from Brown University in 1995. He continued his education at the University of Chicago Law School, receiving his J.D. in 2000. This strong academic foundation prepared him for a distinguished legal career advocating for justice and ethical governance.

William’s extensive career includes 18 years of litigation experience in both state and federal courts and 12 years of legislative service in the Connecticut General Assembly, where he chaired the Judiciary and Banking Committees. During his tenure, he authored significant laws on gun safety, domestic violence prevention, and judicial reform. He became the first Asian American elected to any state office in Connecticut’s history.

William Tong has championed issues that directly impact Connecticut residents, such as lowering energy costs, expanding broadband access, and securing affordable healthcare. He continues to defend reproductive rights, civil liberties, and environmental protections while upholding Connecticut’s landmark post-Sandy Hook gun laws. His leadership extends beyond the state as he serves as President-Elect and Finance Chair of the National Association of Attorneys General and as Eastern Region Chair.
