Thomas M. Wertz

Thomas M. Wertz is an Attorney at Law whose practice centers on workers’ compensation and representing injured workers. With more than 35 years of legal experience, he has focused his career on this area of law and has handled significant cases involving benefits, medical care, and workers’ rights.

Tom studied at the University of Tulsa College of Law in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and at the University of Iowa. Tom has handled workers’ compensation matters that reached the Iowa Supreme Court and contributed to legal changes affecting injured workers. Those matters involved compensation for tinnitus and acute psychological injuries, home medical care for out-of-state injured workers, and requirements for insurers to reevaluate claims after receiving new information.

Tom’s Supreme Court work also addressed the effect of pre-existing employment limitations on compensation. One legal change established that compensation cannot be reduced because of those prior employment limits. Tom has served in leadership roles within Iowa’s legal community. He has been President of the Iowa Association for Justice and Chair of its Workers’ Compensation Section. He has also served on the Governing Council of the Iowa Bar Association, contributing to professional organizations connected with Iowa law.

Tom has received the Verne Lawyer Outstanding Member Award twice. He was also named the first Iowa Association for Justice Pac Champion. These honors reflect his professional involvement and service within the Iowa Association for Justice, where he has also held leadership positions related to workers’ compensation and legal advocacy.
