Rob Bonta

Rob Bonta was sworn in as the 34th Attorney General of California on April 23, 2021, becoming the first person of Filipino descent and the second Asian-American to hold the position. His lifelong passion for fairness and justice was inspired by his parents, who were active in America’s civil rights and social justice movements. Their dedication to equity and the lessons they learned from the United Farm Workers shaped Bonta’s mission to stand up for those who are mistreated or marginalized.

Rob pursued higher education at Yale University, graduating with honors before earning his Juris Doctor from Yale Law School. His academic achievements laid the groundwork for a legal career defined by advocacy and public service. Bonta began his professional journey as a deputy city attorney for the City and County of San Francisco, where he represented the city, its employees, and defended Californians against exploitation and racial profiling. His work during this period strengthened his dedication to using the law to empower and protect communities.

As a member of the California State Assembly, Rob led nation-leading reforms focused on justice, accountability, and equality. He was instrumental in banning private prisons, eliminating cash bail, and fighting racial and economic injustice. He also advanced policies promoting corporate accountability, workers’ rights, environmental protection, and immigrant justice. His leadership consistently centered on creating a more transparent and fair government for all Californians.

Throughout his career, Rob Bonta has remained devoted to serving as the “People’s Attorney.” His focus on integrity, compassion, and systemic reform continues to drive progress across California, ensuring that every resident—regardless of background—has equal access to justice and opportunity.
