Brian L. Schwalb has devoted his legal career to advancing justice and serving the people of the District of Columbia. As the city’s second independently elected Attorney General, Brian focuses on strengthening community trust, defending District autonomy, and ensuring the law works to create a safer, fairer, and more equitable environment for residents, visitors, and workers.

Brian began his educational journey at Duke University, where he earned his undergraduate degree before pursuing a Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School. Following graduation, he completed a two-year judicial clerkship that deepened his understanding of courtroom advocacy and judicial process. These formative experiences helped establish the strong legal foundation that would guide his career.

Brian’s early professional work included serving as a trial attorney at the U.S. Department of Justice, where he gained firsthand experience in federal litigation and public service. After his time at the Department of Justice, he entered private practice, representing individuals, businesses, and nonprofit organizations in high-stakes matters. His advocacy extended to defending people harmed by unconstitutional police force, victims of fraud, and clients facing severe criminal penalties, including those on death row.

Throughout his distinguished career, Brian demonstrated leadership and commitment to integrity. Before assuming public office, he held senior leadership roles within his prior firm, including serving as Vice Chairman and Partner-in-Charge of its Washington, D.C. office. His achievements in trial advocacy earned him recognition as a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, one of the profession’s most respected honors.
