About
Attorney General James Uthmeier is a Florida native whose dedication to public service defines his distinguished career. He was appointed Attorney General by Governor Ron DeSantis in February 2025, after years of serving in pivotal roles that shaped state governance. His leadership continues to strengthen Florida’s legal and administrative framework through disciplined oversight and policy guidance.
James began his academic journey at the University of Florida, where he earned his undergraduate degree while competing on the varsity track and cross-country teams for the National Champion Gators. He later earned his Juris Doctor from Georgetown Law, where he deepened his legal expertise and prepared for his future work in both state and federal service.
During his career, James served as the Chief of Staff for Governor Ron DeSantis, overseeing 20 state agencies and managing more than 100,000 employees. His responsibilities included coordinating executive operations and ensuring policy execution aligned with the governor’s priorities. Prior to this role, he acted as the Governor’s General Counsel, directing litigation and legal affairs across state executive agencies with precision and integrity.
Before his work in Florida’s executive office, James contributed at the federal level as senior advisor and counsel to U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross, where he provided legal and strategic advice on national policy issues. Earlier in his career, he honed his litigation skills as an associate at Jones Day’s Washington, D.C. office, representing clients in complex legal matters.
James Uthmeier also dedicates time to community engagement, co-teaching religious education alongside his wife, Jean, at St. Thomas More Co-Cathedral in Tallahassee. Together, they are proud parents of three children. Beyond his government service, James is an adjunct professor at Florida State University College of Law, sharing his experience and insight with future legal professionals.
