Matthew J. Platkin

Matthew J. Platkin serves as the 62nd Attorney General of New Jersey, appointed by Governor Phil Murphy and confirmed by the Senate in 2022. As the state’s chief law enforcement officer, he has advanced initiatives that strengthen public safety, combat violent crime, and ensure transparency and accountability in law enforcement.

A graduate of Stanford University and Stanford Law School, where he served as an editor of the Stanford Law Review, Matthew combines rigorous legal training with a passion for public service. His experience includes serving as Chief Counsel to Governor Murphy, advising on legislation, executive orders, and state litigation.

Matthew has established himself as a law enforcement leader by prioritizing the reduction of gun violence and auto theft while advancing modern responses to mental health emergencies through the ARRIVE Together program. Under his leadership, the department oversees more than 38,000 law enforcement officers, enforces consumer protection and civil rights laws, and safeguards public trust across all state operations.

Before entering public office, he worked in private practice as a partner at Lowenstein Sandler and as an associate at Debevoise & Plimpton, handling complex white-collar defense and regulatory matters. Earlier, he served as a policy advisor at the Brookings Institution, focusing on job growth and economic recovery.

Throughout his career, Matthew J. Platkin has created and expanded critical state offices, including the Division of Violence Intervention and Victim Assistance, the Statewide Affirmative Firearms Enforcement Office, and the Reproductive Rights Strike Force. His enduring commitment to justice, fairness, and integrity continues to guide New Jersey’s Department of Law and Public Safety in protecting the rights and safety of all residents.
