About
Keith Ellison has served as the Attorney General of Minnesota since 2019, leading with the mission to help Minnesotans live with dignity, safety, and respect. Known as the People’s Lawyer, he has built his career on the belief that everyone counts and deserves compassion, fairness, and justice under the law.
Keith earned his Juris Doctor after completing his undergraduate education, and later practiced as a criminal-defense and civil-rights attorney for 16 years. His early experience in law shaped his commitment to protecting civil liberties and advocating for the rights of vulnerable and marginalized communities.
As Minnesota’s chief legal officer, Keith has led landmark litigation against powerful industries—including Big Oil, Big Tobacco, and opioid manufacturers—to protect consumers and promote accountability. He also spearheaded the prosecution of the 2020 murder of George Floyd, successfully securing convictions against the former police officers involved. This pivotal case reinforced his principle that no one is above the law and strengthened national conversations about justice and policing reform.
Keith has fought to defend democracy and public welfare, leading more than 20 legal challenges against unconstitutional executive actions that threatened healthcare, voting rights, and civil protections. Under his leadership, the Attorney General’s Office enforced anti-eviction and anti–price gouging measures during the COVID-19 pandemic and championed initiatives to reduce drug costs and promote women’s economic security.
Keith Ellison previously served in the U.S. House of Representatives (2007–2019), where he co-chaired the Congressional Progressive Caucus and founded the Congressional Antitrust and Consumer Justice Caucuses. His lifelong dedication to equity, accountability, and justice continues to guide his work in protecting the people of Minnesota.
