Catherine L. Hanaway serves as Missouri’s 45th Attorney General, sworn in on September 8, 2025. A veteran trial lawyer and proven public servant, she has devoted her career to protecting Missouri families and ensuring public accountability. Her leadership centers on strengthening safety, defending constitutional rights, and restoring trust in government institutions.
Catherine earned her Bachelor of Arts from Creighton University and her Juris Doctor from The Catholic University of America, Columbus School of Law. Her legal education established the foundation for an accomplished career built on integrity, perseverance, and a deep commitment to justice for the people of Missouri.
Before her election as Attorney General, Catherine made history as the first woman to serve as Chair of Husch Blackwell LLP, one of the nation’s largest law firms. She led the firm through record growth and built a distinguished reputation for managing complex litigation involving fraud, regulatory issues, and financial misconduct across multiple sectors.
Catherine’s public service career includes tenure as the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Missouri, where she personally tried cases and led major prosecutions involving healthcare fraud and white-collar crime. Earlier, she served in the Missouri House of Representatives, becoming the first and only woman elected Speaker of the House, advancing key legislation to strengthen public safety and government transparency.
