Jonathan Skrmetti currently serves as the Attorney General and Reporter for the State of Tennessee, sworn in on September 1, 2022, for an eight-year term. As the state’s top legal officer, he provides trusted leadership and legal guidance, drawing on extensive experience in public service, prosecution, and private practice.
Jonathan earned honors degrees from George Washington University, the University of Oxford, and Harvard Law School, where he served as editor-in-chief of the Harvard Journal of Law & Public Policy. Following his academic success, he clerked for Judge Steven Colloton on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit, gaining valuable judicial insight.
Before assuming his current role, Jonathan served as Chief Counsel to Governor Bill Lee and Chief Deputy Attorney General under former Attorney General Herbert Slatery. In these positions, he played a key role in shaping Tennessee’s legal policies and ensuring effective representation of state interests at the highest levels.
Earlier in his career, Jonathan was a partner at Butler Snow LLP in Memphis, where he managed complex legal matters for diverse clients. Before private practice, he spent nearly a decade as a federal prosecutor, working first in the Civil Rights Division at Main Justice and later at the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Memphis. There, he prosecuted cases involving human trafficking, public corruption, and violent hate crimes.
Beyond his prosecutorial work, Jonathan contributed to legal education as an adjunct professor of cyberlaw at the University of Memphis. His career reflects a consistent commitment to justice, integrity, and public service.
