Derek Brown’s distinguished career reflects a lifelong dedication to public service and justice. As Utah’s Attorney General, he has demonstrated exceptional leadership rooted in integrity, experience, and an enduring commitment to the people he serves. His career bridges law, government, and education, reflecting both intellect and compassion.

After earning a Bachelor of Arts in English with minors in business administration and music, Derek attended Pepperdine Law School, where he served as editor-in-chief of the Pepperdine Law Review. Graduating in 2000, he clerked for Judge Ruggero Aldisert of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, developing a strong foundation in appellate practice and constitutional law.

Attorney General Derek advanced his career at prominent firms such as Mayer Brown and Sidley Austin, where he specialized in constitutional and appellate litigation. He later served as legal counsel to Senators Bob Bennett and Orrin Hatch, applying his legal acumen to national policy matters. His professional path also included teaching communications law at Brigham Young University, inspiring future generations of legal minds.

In 2010, Derek was elected to the Utah House of Representatives, representing District 49 with distinction. He later served as deputy chief of staff and state director for Senator Mike Lee, contributing to legislative initiatives that shaped Utah’s governance. As chair of the Utah Republican Party from 2019 to 2021, he strengthened civic engagement and public trust through transparent leadership.
