John Smriga is an accomplished criminal law attorney with four decades of experience devoted exclusively to this field. He joined the Law Office of Robert Berke, LLC in 2020 after a distinguished career as a prosecutor in the Bridgeport courts. His extensive experience makes him a respected figure in Connecticut’s legal community, known for his deep knowledge of criminal law and his leadership in high-profile prosecutions.
Mr. Smriga earned his B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania before completing his J.D. at St. John’s University School of Law. This strong educational foundation prepared him for a career that has spanned some of the most challenging areas of criminal justice, including oversight of investigations, courtroom prosecution, and the training and development of legal professionals across the state.
In 2009, Mr. Smriga was appointed State’s Attorney for the Fairfield Judicial District, one of the busiest courts in Connecticut. In this role, he directed the prosecution of all crimes within Bridgeport, Fairfield, Trumbull, Monroe, Stratford, and Easton. His work included handling complex cases and supervising prosecutors across the district, ensuring the fair and effective administration of justice. He also served as head of statewide prosecutor training, shaping the next generation of attorneys in the Division of Criminal Justice.
Throughout his career, John Smriga has been recognized for his service and leadership, receiving the Homer Cummings Award for Outstanding Service to the Division of Criminal Justice and the Liberty Bell Award from the Bridgeport Bar Association. Today, he brings his vast prosecutorial experience to private practice, continuing to represent clients with the same dedication, skill, and commitment to justice that defined his public service career.
