John M. Formella serves as the Attorney General of New Hampshire, where he leads as the state’s Chief Law Enforcement Officer, Chief Prosecutor, and Chief Legal Officer. Since being sworn into office in 2021, he has directed key efforts addressing the opioid crisis, criminal justice reform, and public safety challenges. His work reflects a commitment to accountability, fairness, and protecting the rights of New Hampshire residents.
Formella earned his B.A., magna cum laude, from Florida State University, where he was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa for academic excellence. He went on to earn his J.D., with honors, from George Washington University Law School. While in law school, he was a member of the George Washington University International Law Review, where he refined his research and analytical writing skills, preparing for a distinguished legal career.
Before entering public service, Formella worked in private practice at Pierce Atwood LLP, one of Northern New England’s largest and most respected law firms. As a member of the Business and Environmental Law practice groups, he handled corporate, regulatory, and environmental matters. His experience advising businesses on compliance and policy issues gave him valuable insight into the legal complexities affecting both public and private sectors.
Prior to his appointment as Attorney General, John M. Formella served as Legal Counsel to Governor Chris Sununu, where he provided guidance on major state matters, including healthcare settlements, criminal justice reform, and the statewide response to the Covid-19 pandemic. As Attorney General, he continues to serve with integrity, fostering collaboration, transparency, and fairness. His leadership ensures that the laws of New Hampshire are applied equally and that justice is upheld for all citizens across the state.
