About
Nick Brown serves as Washington State’s 19th Attorney General, elected in November 2024. As a dedicated advocate for justice, Nick Brown works to protect residents’ rights, ensure public safety, and promote accountability at every level of government. His leadership emphasizes fairness, transparency, and safeguarding the well-being of Washingtonians through strong legal advocacy.
Nick earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Morehouse College in 1999, where he participated in the ROTC program that helped shape his commitment to public service. He later received his Juris Doctor from Harvard University in 2002, gaining the academic foundation that would guide his career in public law, civil rights, and government service.
Nick began his legal journey in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General’s (JAG) Corps, where he served as both prosecutor and defense attorney. In that capacity, he fought predatory lenders and corporations targeting soldiers and their families while also defending the rights of young servicemembers. His dedication and service earned him the Bronze Star in 2005, recognizing his exemplary contribution to military justice and leadership in protecting soldiers’ welfare.
Following his military service, Nick returned to Washington State to continue his public career as a prosecutor before becoming lead counsel to Governor Jay Inslee. In that position, he helped implement key initiatives, including leading efforts to place a moratorium on the death penalty and assisting in challenges to unlawful federal actions, such as the early versions of the Muslim Ban.
Afterward, Nick gained private-sector experience handling complex civil and constitutional litigation for public, private, and nonprofit organizations. In 2021, President Joe Biden appointed him as the U.S. Attorney for Western Washington, where he addressed pressing issues such as the fentanyl crisis, human trafficking, and hate crimes while chairing the Attorney General’s Advisory Subcommittee on Civil Rights.
Now, as Attorney General, Nick Brown continues his lifelong mission to make Washington safer and more just. His priorities include protecting workers and the environment, defending civil rights, and holding powerful institutions accountable for actions that harm communities across the state.
