Austin Knudsen

Austin Knudsen has built his career on service, leadership, and justice for the people of Montana. As the state’s Attorney General, Austin brings deep local roots and hands-on experience from his years as a prosecutor and legislator to address Montana’s most pressing issues, including crime and public safety.

Austin earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Montana after completing his undergraduate studies at Montana State University-Bozeman. He financed his education through hard work, taking on multiple jobs while maintaining strong academic performance. His education laid the groundwork for a legal career grounded in practical knowledge, integrity, and advocacy for Montana communities.

Austin began his professional journey practicing law in Plentywood before establishing his own firm in Culbertson. There, he managed a wide variety of legal matters, including estate planning, probate, civil litigation, land use, oil and gas, and real estate law. His practice allowed him to understand the real-world challenges faced by Montana families, farmers, and businesses, shaping his client-centered approach.

Austin’s public service career began in 2010 when he was elected to represent House District 34. His leadership quickly gained recognition, leading to his election as Speaker Pro Tempore and later as Speaker of the House for the 2015 and 2017 sessions. As Speaker, he focused on fiscal responsibility, government accountability, and ensuring taxpayer resources were used effectively.

Austin Knudsen continues his commitment as Montana’s Attorney General, championing justice, safety, and the values that define his state. Austin later served as Roosevelt County Attorney, where he worked closely with law enforcement to combat the rising drug crisis and related violent crime. His work led to significant increases in prosecutions and safer communities.
