Zane A. Umsted is a dedicated attorney at Madia Law LLC, where he uses his skills in research and writing to support civil rights, employment, and trial cases. Known for his principled approach and sharp legal mind, he believes deeply in the rule of law as a force for social justice. He works hard to translate his clients’ stories into clear, powerful arguments that judges and juries understand. Zane’s work is focused on preparing solid briefs, motions, and appeals that help give clients the best chance at a fair result.
Zane earned his B.A. with Highest Distinction from the University of Iowa in 2011. He continued at the University of Iowa College of Law, where he received his J.D. in 2015 and was inducted into the Order of the Coif, an honor for top graduates. Zane also served as the Senior Note & Comment Editor of the Iowa Law Review and earned national recognition for his legal writing.
During law school, Zane gained valuable experience working for public defender offices in Charlotte, Iowa City, and Cedar Rapids. After graduating, he clerked for the Honorable Linda Reade in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Iowa for two years. He joined Madia Law LLC in 2017, where he now focuses on research and writing for complex trial and appellate cases in both state and federal courts.
Zane A. Umsted is licensed in Minnesota state and federal courts and the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals. He is a member of the Minnesota State Bar Association, the Federal Bar Association, and the National Employment Lawyers Association (MN).
