About

Trey Cox is Co-Chair of Gibson Dunn’s global Litigation Practice Group and Co-Partner in Charge of the firm’s Dallas office. A seasoned trial lawyer, Trey represents clients in complex, high-profile commercial disputes across a broad range of industries, including energy, technology, securities, and healthcare. Known for his commanding courtroom presence and strategic trial advocacy, he has secured some of the largest and most closely watched verdicts in the country.

Trey received his B.A., magna cum laude, from Washington & Lee University in 1992 and his J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1995. Following graduation, he clerked for the Honorable Jacques L. Wiener, Jr.

Chambers USA consistently ranks Trey in Band 1 for Trial Lawyers and General Commercial Litigation, with clients describing him as “a super-dynamic trial lawyer” who is “incredible in court and with clients.” In 2025, he led Gibson Dunn to a historic $667 million jury verdict for Energy Transfer LP and Dakota Access Pipeline—the largest verdict in North Dakota history—earning AmLaw’s Litigator of the Week recognition.

Trey Cox’s work has also been featured in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, Bloomberg News, and other major outlets. He is double Board Certified in Civil Trial and Civil Pre-Trial Law and is a distinguished fellow of both the American Board of Trial Advocates and the Litigation Counsel of America.

Beyond his trial work, Trey is recognized as a thought leader in jury communication and courtroom technology. He lectures at leading law schools, authors widely respected publications, and co-wrote The Jury Rules, a book distilling decades of insights into juror decision-making.
