About
Tom Owens is Counsel at Biospark Intellectual Property Law and an intellectual property attorney with more than a decade of experience in strategic IP counseling for life sciences clients and investors. His technical background is in cell biology. He has represented clients working with immunotherapy, antibody constructs, cell-based therapies, cytokines, gene therapy, RNA trans-splicing, exosomes, agricultural biostimulants, and food technologies, connecting patent strategy with scientific development.
Tom earned his J.D. summa cum laude from the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University in 2013, a Ph.D. in Biology from Johns Hopkins University in 2010, and a B.S. in Microbiology from Brigham Young University in 2002. His scientific education gives him a strong foundation for understanding complex biological technologies and for translating technical concepts into patent strategies, prosecution positions, and portfolio decisions.
Tom advises life sciences companies and investors on intellectual property strategy across a wide range of biotechnology and related technologies. His work includes patent counseling for therapeutic platforms, gene and cell technologies, biological products, agricultural innovations, and food-related technologies. By combining scientific training with patent-law experience, he helps clients evaluate inventions, shape protection strategies, and consider how individual filings fit within broader research, investment, and commercialization goals.
Tom Owens is admitted in Texas and before the US Patent and Trademark Office. His practice is particularly suited to clients whose patent issues depend on detailed understanding of biology and rapidly developing scientific fields. He brings doctoral-level scientific training to legal counseling and helps companies and investors assess patent opportunities, manage technical portfolios, and develop intellectual property positions around research programs, products, and platform technologies in the life sciences.
