Todd J. Dressel is a partner in the Restructuring and Insolvency Practice Group at McGuireWoods, based in San Francisco. He focuses on corporate and municipal bankruptcy matters, representing a range of creditors such as financial institutions, hedge funds, indenture trustees, and institutional investors. His work spans both in-court and out-of-court proceedings, where he advises on asset sales, DIP financing, plan confirmation, and relief from stay matters.
Dressel also handles commercial litigation in state and federal courts, including breach of contract disputes, foreclosure actions, fiduciary claims, and defense of banking clients. He brings significant trial and appellate experience, having litigated cases through federal and state jury trials and argued before circuit courts. His legal career began with a judicial clerkship for Judge Merlyn H. Hoyt of Nevada’s Seventh Judicial District Court, followed by service as a Deputy Attorney General in Nevada’s Special Prosecutions Unit, where he earned a Declaration of Excellence from the state’s Attorney General.
Dressel has experience across various industries, including healthcare, banking, agriculture, telecommunications, real estate, technology, and transportation. His notable work includes representing creditors in the bankruptcy proceedings of the Palm Drive Healthcare District, Mendocino Coast Health Care District, and the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team. He has also represented DIP lenders, agent banks, and secured creditors in major Chapter 11 cases and restructurings.
Dressel earned his J.D. from California Western School of Law in 1996 and holds a B.A. in Political Science and Japanese language from the University of Minnesota, earned in 1992.
Dressel has been active in the bankruptcy legal community, having served on the Bench-Bar Liaison Committee of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of California, including as co-chair. He also chaired the Commercial Law and Bankruptcy Section of the Bar Association of San Francisco.
Todd J. Dressel is admitted to practice in California and Nevada, multiple federal district courts, the U.S. Court of Federal Claims, and the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Ninth and Tenth Circuits.
