About

Steve Marshall became Alabama’s 48th Attorney General on February 10, 2017. Over the course of his accomplished career, Steve has earned distinction as a dedicated defender of justice and accountability. His leadership continues to reflect a deep commitment to public safety, fair governance, and strengthening the integrity of Alabama’s legal system.

Steve began his higher education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, completing his Bachelor’s degree in 1987. He later obtained his Juris Doctor from the University of Alabama School of Law in 1990. This strong educational background laid the foundation for his lifelong pursuit of fairness, legal excellence, and community-focused service.

From 2001 until 2017, Steve served as District Attorney for Marshall County, where his work brought lasting improvements to local law enforcement. He created the Marshall County Major Crimes Unit, the Computer Forensics Lab, and the Crystal Meth Task Force—initiatives that strengthened investigations and significantly curbed criminal activity throughout the region.

Steve Marshall’s influence extended to statewide legislation as well. He was instrumental in advancing the Brody Act, which recognizes crimes against both expectant mothers and their unborn children. His efforts also supported the enactment of Kelley’s Law, designating the murder of an individual under a protective order as a capital offense—an important step in protecting victims of domestic violence.

As chairman of the Alabama Criminal Justice Information System and an active member of the Alabama Sentencing Commission, Steve focused on developing policies that enhance public trust, improve safety, and uphold ethical legal standards. His enduring service to the people of Alabama reflects unwavering leadership, reform-driven vision, and a steadfast dedication to justice and accountability.
