Stephen E. Berken

Stephen E. Berken is a board-certified consumer bankruptcy attorney and a recognized leader in Colorado’s bankruptcy law field. As a partner at Berken Cloyes, PC, Mr. Berken has built a distinguished career focused on representing individuals in Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy cases and handling complex adversary proceedings within the bankruptcy system. He is widely respected for his strategic advocacy, litigation experience, and deep knowledge of consumer debt issues.

Mr. Berken earned his B.A. in Political Science cum laude from the University of California in 1981. He went on to receive his J.D. from Hastings College of the Law, University of California, in 1984. He was admitted to practice law on November 1, 1985.

Mr. Berken is the Colorado state chair of the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys (NACBA) and a founding Colorado Consumer Bankruptcy Association member. He created and manages the Colorado Debtors’ Counsel Listserv—an internet-based platform that provides free resources and support to bankruptcy attorneys statewide. Additionally, he serves on the ABI Advisory Board for Colorado and is the state chair for the Credit Abuse Resistance Education (C.A.R.E.) program.

A board-certified specialist in consumer bankruptcy law by the American Bankruptcy Board of Certification, Mr. Berken has been honored as Bankruptcy Attorney of the Year by 5280 Magazine for four consecutive years: 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017. His contributions to legal education are extensive. He has served as a speaker and panelist at national and regional events, including the American Bankruptcy Institute (ABI) and the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys conventions.
