Stefanie A. Murphy

Stefanie A. Murphy is a Rhode Island criminal defense attorney with more than 20 years of courtroom experience handling complex criminal matters. Her work includes DUI defense, violent crimes, drug offenses, and federal cases. She has defended more than 2,500 DUI cases and regularly represents clients in jury trials, suppression hearings, and appeals.

Stefanie began her academic path at College of the Holy Cross, earning a BA – Bachelor of Arts in Political Science in 2001. She later attended Roger Williams Law School, where she completed her Juris Doctor in 2005 and prepared for a career focused on criminal litigation.

Stefanie developed her practice by working on both sides of the courtroom. She has served as a town solicitor for Rhode Island municipalities while also defending people accused of crimes. This combined experience gives her insight into how investigations, charging decisions, and courtroom strategies develop.

Stefanie has defended more than 2,500 DUI and criminal cases across Rhode Island courts, including District Court, Superior Court, and the Traffic Tribunal. Her work covers every stage of a case, from the first arrest call through motion practice, evidentiary hearings, jury trials, and appellate review.

Stefanie has received peer recognition throughout her career, including fourteen consecutive years of Super Lawyers honors. She was selected as a Rising Star from 2012 through 2018 and later named to Super Lawyers from 2019 through 2025, reflecting consistent respect from the broader legal community.

Stefanie is also a published legal author and editor of the MCLE publication “A Practical Guide to Trying DUI Cases in Rhode Island,” released in 2024. The detailed guide explains breath testing issues, field sobriety analysis, motion practice, jury selection, and trial strategy for DUI litigation.
