About

Richard G. Mack, Jr. is a highly respected labor and employment attorney with extensive experience representing unions and employees in litigation, arbitration, and negotiations. As a dedicated advocate for workers’ rights, he has secured significant victories in labor law, civil rights, and employment disputes.

Richard earned a dual Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and Political Science from the University of Michigan and obtained his law degree from Wayne State University Law School. While in law school, he founded The Journal of Law in Society, the institution’s second scholarly law journal, and served as its Editor-in-Chief.

Throughout his career, Richard has successfully represented unions in complex negotiations, grievance arbitration, and public and private sector labor disputes. Notably, he played a key role in the City of Detroit bankruptcy, serving as the chief lawyer for a coalition of nearly 30 Detroit unions and co-counsel for the AFSCME union. His efforts helped secure a template union contract that provided job stability and wage increases for city employees.

As an employment and civil rights litigator, Richard has won millions of dollars for his clients. His victories include securing compensation for government employees illegally furloughed, obtaining financial relief for retirees facing unlawful reductions in pensions and healthcare benefits, and advocating for whistleblowers who exposed environmental and workplace violations. In one case, he sued Wayne County on behalf of a fired employee under the First Amendment and Michigan’s Whistleblower statute, not only winning a substantial settlement but also prompting a state-led investigation into environmental pollution.

Recognized for his legal excellence, Richard has been named a Michigan Super Lawyer every year since 2011. He is actively involved in legal and civic organizations, serving on the Detroit Charter Revision Commission, the Executive Board of the Detroit Branch NAACP, and as General Counsel for the Metropolitan-Detroit AFL-CIO. He also lectures for the Wayne State University Labor Studies Center and the Institute of Continuing Legal Education. With a strong commitment to workers’ rights and social justice, Richard continues to fight for fair treatment and equitable labor practices in the workplace.
