Keith G. Kautz is a Wyoming native who has dedicated his life to public service and the law. Growing up in Goshen County, he earned his Bachelor of Science degree with honors from the University of Wyoming in 1975 and his Juris Doctor from the University of Wyoming College of Law in 1978. His deep roots in the state have guided a distinguished legal career marked by integrity, leadership, and commitment to justice.
Following graduation, Keith practiced law in Torrington with the firm of Sawyer, Warren & Kautz from 1979 to 1993. His exemplary work in private practice led to his appointment as a District Judge for Wyoming’s Eighth Judicial District. In 2015, Governor Matt Mead appointed him to the Wyoming Supreme Court, where his judicial insight and professionalism earned him great respect among peers and the public alike.
Throughout his judicial tenure, Justice Keith contributed significantly to Wyoming’s legal system. He served on numerous committees, including the state’s civil and criminal pattern jury instructions committees and the Commission on Judicial Conduct and Ethics. His leadership extended to chairing the Wyoming District Judges’ Conference and the state’s Judicial Education program. During his time on the Supreme Court, he authored more than 200 opinions, including 34 dissents and concurrences, shaping key areas of Wyoming law.
After retiring from the bench in March 2024 under Wyoming’s mandatory judicial retirement, Keith G. Kautz returned to active legal practice. In July 2025, Governor Mark Gordon appointed him Attorney General for the State of Wyoming. His extensive experience, dedication to fairness, and decades of service continue to uphold the highest standards of Wyoming’s legal community.
