About

Michael P. Richman is a seasoned attorney specializing in bankruptcy law, financial restructuring, and commercial litigation. He is a partner at Richman & Richman LLC in Madison, Wisconsin, representing Chapter 11 business debtors, creditors, and creditors’ committees.

With over 40 years of legal practice, Mr. Richman comprehensively understands financial distress, bankruptcy, and out-of-court restructurings. His expertise includes prosecuting and defending complex preference and fraudulent conveyance cases, breach of duty claims against corporate insiders, and advocating for asset purchasers under Bankruptcy Code section 363.

Mr. Richman earned his Juris Doctor (J.D.) with honors from Columbia Law School, where he served as Managing Editor of the Columbia Journal of Transnational Law and received the prestigious Berger Prize in international law. He also holds an A.B. with honors in Political Science from Vassar College.

Before moving to Wisconsin in 2018, Mr. Richman practiced mainly in New York City, appearing frequently in the Southern District of New York’s federal, state, and bankruptcy courts. He also represented clients in Delaware courts and has experience in more than 20 states. With active Bar admissions in New York and Wisconsin, he continues to represent clients nationwide in various bankruptcy and litigation matters.

Mr. Richman has played a significant role in the American Bankruptcy Institute (ABI), serving as President from 2004 to 2005 and holding various leadership positions such as Director and Chairman of the Board. He has been an active member of ABI’s National Commission to Reform Chapter 11 and co-vice chair of its National Ethics Task Force.

Recognized as a “Super Lawyer” by Thomson Reuters for many years, including in 2023 in Wisconsin, Mr. Richman was named a 2024 “Lawyer of the Year” for Litigation – Bankruptcy in Madison by Best Lawyers.
