About
Mei Benni is Special Counsel at Biospark Intellectual Property Law and an intellectual property attorney with a molecular biology and medical background. She has more than twenty years of experience in patent counseling, patent prosecution, and transactional work for biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies. Her technical work spans biologics, small molecules, pharmaceutical and chemical formulations, and manufacturing processes, allowing her to connect patent strategy with scientific and commercial considerations.
Mei earned a J.D. from the University of Connecticut School of Law in 2002, a Ph.D. in Molecular Genetics and Microbiology from Rutgers University in 1999, and a Bachelor of Medicine from Shandong University School of Medicine in 1992. Her scientific and medical education provides a strong base for analyzing complex inventions, communicating with researchers, and developing patent strategies for technologies that require detailed understanding of biology, chemistry, medicine, and product development.
Mei has advised clients on patent prosecution, freedom-to-operate analysis, due diligence, licensing, and other intellectual property transactions. Before joining Biospark, she worked as a patent attorney in private practice, served in-house at a biotechnology company, and later worked for a large international pharmaceutical company. Her experience has included US post-grant procedures, European oppositions, portfolio positioning, regulatory exclusivity considerations, and strategies designed to reduce freedom-to-operate risk while protecting valuable technology.
Mei Benni is admitted in New York and Connecticut and before the US Patent and Trademark Office. Her career combines private practice, biotechnology-company work, and senior in-house pharmaceutical experience. She helps life sciences clients evaluate patent positions, build prosecution strategies, analyze competing rights, and support licensing or other transactions. Her blend of legal, medical, and molecular-biology training is especially relevant to intellectual property matters involving complex therapeutic, formulation, and manufacturing technologies.
