Mara Stein

Mara Stein is a Takoma Park, Maryland immigration and family law attorney and the managing attorney of Stein Legal LLC. She represents individuals, parents, and children in immigration, removal defense, and domestic relations matters. Her immigration practice includes asylum, lawful permanent residency, citizenship, and Special Immigrant Juvenile cases. She also helps parents address custody, child support, divorce, and related family disputes through negotiation, litigation, and appeals.

Mara earned her J.D. from American University Washington College of Law after beginning her professional path in journalism. She received a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland’s Philip Merrill College of Journalism and participated in its Scholars Program. Her education strengthened her research, writing, communication, and advocacy skills. She became licensed in Maryland in 2009, providing the foundation for her work with families navigating complicated legal systems.

Mara founded her practice in 2012 to serve clients facing immigration and family law challenges. She has helped children obtain Special Immigrant Juvenile status and pursue lawful permanent residency and US citizenship. She has represented people in removal proceedings and helped clients become lawful permanent residents. Her family law experience includes securing child support, protecting custody arrangements, obtaining monetary awards in divorce cases, and handling appellate matters involving custody and asylum.

Mara Stein has built a diverse legal team focused on informed advocacy, teamwork, and responsive client service. She has helped secure a successful child custody appeal before the Maryland Appellate Court. She has also helped overturn an asylum denial before the Board of Immigration Appeals. Her memberships include the Maryland State Bar Association, local bar associations, and the American Immigration Lawyers Association. She also serves on the Takoma Langley Crossroads Association board.
