Lou Ann S. Cyrus

Lou Ann S. Cyrus is a member and equity owner at Shuman McCuskey Slicer PLLC, with more than 25 years of insurance defense experience at the trial and appellate levels. Her practice focuses on complex civil litigation and constitutional rights lawsuits and disputes. She defends state, public, and private entities in cases involving alleged civil rights violations in correctional facilities, schools, churches, and workplaces. Her experience extends to premises liability and automobile negligence matters.

Ms. Cyrus earned her J.D. from West Virginia University College of Law, where she received several academic and leadership honors. She earned her B.S.Ed., cum laude, from Concord University. Her undergraduate achievements included the David S. Roth Memorial Outstanding English Major Award and the James B. Shrewsbury Jr. Award for Academic Excellence. Her educational background includes training in law, English, and education.

Ms. Cyrus has served as lead counsel in numerous trials resulting in defense verdicts. Her experience includes civil rights trials involving allegations of sexual assault, age discrimination, employment misconduct, and other constitutional claims. She frequently counsels insurers on evaluating and handling claims throughout the claims process. A former West Virginia public school teacher, she brings educational experience to her representation of county boards of education, principals, teachers, and school personnel.

Lou Ann S. Cyrus maintains a practice encompassing civil rights litigation, general litigation, insurance coverage and bad faith, employment litigation, and public entity matters. She has lectured on preventing sexual harassment and workplace discrimination and has presented on insurance and litigation topics.
