John Fossum

John Fossum is a highly skilled attorney with more than thirty years of experience serving clients throughout Minnesota. As the founder of Fossum Law Office, LLC, he focuses on criminal defense, employment investigations, business law, and civil litigation. Known for his integrity, responsiveness, and dedication, he works hard to deliver the best possible results for each client. John has built his reputation as a trusted legal advisor and subject matter expert who leads with compassion and clear guidance.

John holds a J.D. from William Mitchell College of Law, earned in 1993, where he contributed to the Minnesota Justice Foundation and participated in the Legal Assistance to Minnesota Prisoners Clinic. He also holds a B.A. in Speech and Communications with a minor in Journalism from Macalester College, which he completed in 1987. John expanded his global perspective through studies at Uppsala University in 1992 and Warnborough College, Oxford in 1985.

John has been practicing law in Minnesota since 1993, representing clients in complex cases in both state and federal courts. His experience includes several years as an instructor of business law, criminal law, and legal ethics—teaching both online and in person and mentoring the next generation of legal professionals. From 2007 to 2008, John served as a Criminal Justice Advisor in Afghanistan, where he trained Afghan police and prosecutors in criminal law, legal procedures, and justice system best practices.

As the elected County Attorney for Rice County from 2015 to 2022, John Fossum led all county prosecutions, managing cases ranging from minor traffic offenses to major felonies, including murder. He is an MSBA Board Certified Criminal Law Specialist and has been recognized by Super Lawyers for Criminal Defense. John’s Bar Admissions include the Minnesota Supreme Court, U.S. District Court District of Minnesota, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court. Through every role, he has shown his commitment to providing thorough legal help when people need it most.
