About
John Barry is a civil defense litigator and associate in Seattle with a broad practice that includes civil rights defense, municipal liability, personal injury, and professional liability cases. He has successfully defended public entities and officials, combining legal precision with strategic insight. His background in legislative affairs and government investigations allows him to offer clients a well-rounded perspective, particularly in cases influenced by evolving policy and statutory frameworks.
John earned his J.D. from the University of Washington School of Law in 2019 and holds a B.A. in History from St. Olaf College, class of 2012.
Before joining private practice, John served in Seattle’s Office of Police Accountability (OPA), advising on high-profile investigations into policy violations and legislation. He also worked in the U.S. Senate as a legislative aide on foreign affairs, military, and judiciary matters—experience that continues to shape his legislative and policy advisory work for clients today.
John’s litigation experience includes successfully obtaining summary judgment dismissals in federal civil rights lawsuits, including claims involving wrongful arrest and alleged excessive force during 2020 protests. He has also helped private entities, such as athletic facilities, navigate complex multi-party litigation and achieve favorable settlements.
John’s pro bono work includes resolving employment disputes for nonprofit organizations, helping them maintain operational stability in the face of legal threats. John’s legal practice is further strengthened by his solid record in trial preparation, discovery disputes, and appellate motions practice.
Admitted to practice in Washington and in both the Eastern and Western U.S. District Courts of Washington, John is active in the legal community. He is a member of the Washington Defense Trial Lawyers, the Federal Bar Association (where he serves as a Young Lawyer Representative), and the DRI Young Lawyers Committee.
