James R. Colwell

James R. Colwell is a dedicated attorney focused on helping injured and disabled individuals across Iowa. With a strong background in personal injury, workers’ compensation, and Social Security Disability law, he works to ensure his clients receive the benefits and compensation they deserve under the law.

James earned his B.B.A. in Accounting with a Political Science minor from the University of Iowa Tippie College of Business in 2011. After briefly working in public accounting, he returned to the University of Iowa College of Law, where he received his J.D. with distinction in 2014. During law school, he was awarded the William E. Riley Workers’ Compensation Scholarship.

James began his legal career by advocating for injured workers, veterans, and disabled individuals across Iowa. He also represented insurance carriers and employers in defending against benefit claims, gaining a well-rounded understanding of both sides of the law. This experience sharpened his ability to navigate complex claims efficiently and effectively.

James is admitted to practice law in Iowa and before the Federal District Courts for the Northern and Southern Districts of Iowa, as well as the United States Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit. His professional affiliations include the Iowa Association for Justice, NOSSCR, and both the Iowa and Polk County Bar Associations.

James holds several leadership appointments, including current roles on the Grievance Commission of the Supreme Court of Iowa and the Workers’ Compensation Section Council of the Iowa Bar Association. He also serves on the Public Relations Committee of the Iowa Bar Association, reflecting his commitment to ethical advocacy and community engagement.
