About
James M. Callaghan represents clients in court on a regular basis and handles a wide range of legal disputes. His practice includes criminal law, family law, civil litigation, municipal law, workers’ compensation, and probate law. Through steady courtroom work, he helps individuals and communities address serious legal challenges every day.
James graduated from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, and later completed his Juris Doctor at American University Law School in Washington, D.C. These studies provided the academic groundwork that strengthened his legal reasoning, writing ability, and courtroom preparation for a demanding career in litigation and public service work ahead.
James began his legal career after law school by serving as a law clerk for the Honorable Joseph F. Rodgers, Jr., Presiding Justice of the Rhode Island Superior Court. In this role, he gained direct exposure to courtroom procedure, judicial decision-making, and complex litigation matters that shaped his early career.
James later worked as a Special Assistant Attorney General in the Rhode Island Department of Attorney General from 2004 to 2012. During this period, he handled criminal matters across Washington County, Kent County, Newport County, and Providence County, managing prosecutions and representing the state in court proceedings throughout the state.
James also served as Chief of the Newport County office from 2011 to 2012 while continuing active courtroom work. Over the course of his career, he has tried more than thirty cases before a jury, including serious charges such as murder, felony assault, and driving under the influence in court.
James has also taken on important public service responsibilities within local government. In February of 2017, he and his colleagues were appointed legal counsel for the Town of North Kingstown, advising the Town Council and town staff on legal matters. He also serves as a Town Solicitor for New Shoreham.
James M. Callaghan has also contributed to civic leadership through elected service. From 2012 to 2014, he was President of the Narragansett Town Council, where he worked on municipal issues affecting residents and community planning. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Burke Scholarship Fund, supporting students.
