About

James C. Munch, III is a partner and attorney at Vafiades, Brountas & Kominsky in Bangor, Maine. He advises clients on divorce and family law, child custody, bankruptcy, debt relief, collections, and landlord and tenant matters. His practice also includes probate litigation and disputes that affect families and their financial arrangements. He has worked at the firm since 1992 and has been a partner since 2001.

James earned degrees in Classical History from Brown University and Political Science from New York University. He then completed a J.D. at the University of Maine School of Law in 1991. During law school, he helped establish an international law program and the Jessup Moot Court program. He subsequently clerked for Judge James B. Haines of the United States Bankruptcy Court in Bangor. His education and clerkship inform his work in family and financial proceedings.

His experience includes more than three decades of representation in family law, probate court matters, and bankruptcy. He helps clients address divorce, parental responsibilities, custody questions, debt pressures, and related court proceedings. Earlier in his career, he also represented parents and students in special education matters, although that is no longer part of his current practice. His work often involves overlapping financial and family issues that require coordinated legal planning.

James C. Munch, III has also taught and lectured on history and anthropology at the University of Maine. His continuing involvement with academic subjects complements a practice built around identifying clients’ objectives and developing an appropriate path through negotiation or litigation. In family and bankruptcy matters, he works with individuals facing difficult decisions about children, household finances, and legal obligations, with an emphasis on practical solutions.
