About

Jane S.E. Clayton is a partner and attorney at Vafiades, Brountas & Kominsky in Bangor, Maine. Her practice is devoted to family law, including divorce, child custody, adoption, parental rights and responsibilities, and post-judgment motions. She works with clients navigating significant family changes and court proceedings affecting parents and children. She joined the firm in 1996 and became a partner in 2001.

Jane earned a B.A. in Political Science, with high distinction, from the University of Maine in 1983. She received a J.D. from Villanova University School of Law in 1986. She was admitted to practice in Maine and the United States District Court for the District of Maine in 1988. Her education and legal training support a practice centered on interpreting family law, evaluating client circumstances, and resolving contested issues.

She began her legal career in 1988 and has focused on family law throughout her work at the firm. Her matters include divorce proceedings, parenting arrangements, adoption, custody disputes, and issues arising after court orders have been entered. She has also been involved with organizations devoted to mediation and collaborative law. This work provides a background for considering whether clients’ family law needs can be addressed through agreement or require courtroom advocacy.

Jane S.E. Clayton has served with the Maine Collaborative Law Alliance, the Maine Association of Mediators, and Pine Tree Legal Assistance, among other organizations. She has also participated in Maine bar disciplinary and fee arbitration bodies and court library committees.
