For more than four decades, James A. Hopkinson has provided legal support to clients across Maine. His practice focuses on areas such as real estate, estate planning, and business law. Whether guiding individuals through residential closings, assisting companies with commercial property issues, or working with lenders on financing, he is recognized for delivering clear and effective solutions.
After earning a BA with Magna Cum Laude honors from Bates College, James went on to obtain his JD from the University of Maine School of Law. Beyond his legal work, he is dedicated to education in his field. He frequently presents to financial and real estate professionals and hosts community programs, giving people practical insight into complex legal matters.
James assists clients in real estate sales, purchases, and financing, as well as guiding lenders through loan documentation and closings. He has extensive experience helping owners of investment properties structure and document 1031 tax-deferred exchanges. Beyond real estate, he designs customized estate plans that align with each client’s goals and works alongside their advisors to ensure cohesive planning.
James is also actively involved in public service and professional organizations. He serves as vice-chair of the Bath, Maine planning board and maintains memberships with the Maine Bar Association, Lawyer-Pilots Bar Association, NTSB Bar Association, Wealth Counsel, National Business Aviation Association, and the National Association of Elderlaw Attorneys. In addition, he is a Panel Attorney for the Aircraft Owner and Pilots Association and is admitted to practice in all Maine Courts, the U.S. District Court for the District of Maine, and the U.S. Tax Court.
