Irwin B. Levin

Irwin B. Levin is the Managing Partner of CohenMalad, LLP in Indianapolis, where he has practiced since 1978. His work focuses on class actions, mass torts, and complex commercial litigation. He handles cases involving securities fraud, insurance, consumer protection, and pharmaceutical drugs and medical devices. Over more than four decades, he has represented clients in major disputes across the United States, including cases involving large groups of affected individuals.

Irwin earned his J.D. from Indiana University School of Law in Indianapolis in 1978 and his B.A. in Political Science, cum laude, from Indiana University in 1974. He served as Master Commissioner of the Marion County Circuit Court in 1978 and Judge Pro Tempore in 1979. Early in his career, he was among the lead counsel in the Indianapolis Ramada Inn/United States Air Force crash litigation and the Greenwood air crash disaster.

Irwin served as lead counsel in two class actions against the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles involving overcharges to millions of residents. The cases settled for $30 million and $59 million. He also served as class counsel in a $15 million settlement involving the Indiana Department of Children’s Services. As Co-Lead Counsel in concrete industry antitrust cases, he helped secure settlements of $59 million in central Indiana and $18 million in Iowa.

Irwin served as counsel in the first class action against Swiss banks on behalf of Holocaust survivors in 1996. He joined the ten-lawyer executive committee overseeing the consolidated litigation, which resulted in a $1.25 billion settlement. He also handled related cases against German banks and corporations involving assets and forced labor taken from Holocaust victims. His work included legal research, court filings, and settlement negotiations in these cases.

Irwin B. Levin has earned Indiana Super Lawyers recognition from 2004 to 2026, including Top 50 rankings, Chambers USA Band 1 for Class Action Litigation, and Best Lawyers’ 2016 Lawyer of the Year for Class Action Litigation – Plaintiffs. He belongs to the Indiana State Bar Association, Indianapolis Bar Association, Indiana Trial Lawyers Association, and American Association for Justice.
