Heather McCabe

Heather McCabe is co-managing partner at McCabe Russell Divorce and Child Custody Lawyers in Fulton, Maryland. She focuses on divorce and family law matters for clients in Maryland and the District of Columbia. McCabe handles complex divorces, child-related disputes, protective and peace orders, property division, and marital agreements. She also assists clients with estate planning and wills, bringing more than 25 years of experience to negotiation, mediation, and litigation involving important family and financial issues.

McCabe earned her J.D. from The George Washington University Law School in 1997, where she received the Richard C. Lewis Memorial Award. She earned a B.A. in political science, cum laude, from Amherst College in 1994. Her legal education, together with later experience teaching at Georgetown University Law Center and American University, supports a practice centered on careful analysis, persuasive advocacy, and practical communication in sensitive family law matters.

McCabe regularly handles complex family law cases involving same-sex divorce, property division, protective and peace orders, and other disputes requiring negotiation or courtroom advocacy. She is also trained as a mediator and parenting coordinator and is certified as a Best Interest Attorney and collaborative divorce attorney. Before and alongside private practice, she taught legal writing and related subjects, experience that strengthens her ability to organize difficult issues, develop persuasive arguments, and guide clients through demanding legal proceedings.

Heather McCabe has received professional recognition for her family law work and service to the legal community. She has been selected as a Maryland Super Lawyer from 2021 through 2026 and was included in Best Lawyers in 2021. In 2023, Governor Wes Moore appointed her to the Trial Court Judicial Nominating Commission for Howard County for a term extending through 2027. McCabe has also served as president of the Maryland LGBTQ Bar Association and received a President’s Citation for Pro Bono Service.
