Gerald M. Finkel

Gerald M. Finkel is an accomplished attorney based in North Charleston, South Carolina. He currently serves as Of Counsel at Finkel Law Firm L.L.C. With a legal career spanning over five decades, Mr. Finkel has made significant contributions to law practice as a litigator, educator, and thought leader. He founded Finkel Law Firm LLC and served as its Managing Member until 2007.

After stepping down from active firm leadership, Mr. Finkel became a full-time faculty member at the Charleston School of Law, where he taught Torts, Insurance Law, Evidence, and Trial Advocacy. From 1981 to 2006, he also taught as an adjunct professor at the University of South Carolina School of Law.

Mr. Finkel earned his J.D. from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1970, where he was the Business Manager of the South Carolina Law Review and received the American Jurisprudence Awards in Evidence and Industries. He holds a B.A. from New York University College of Arts and Science, which he earned in 1962.

Mr. Finkel’s legal focus includes commercial litigation, business litigation, and insurance law. His courtroom experience includes practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, U.S. Courts of Appeals, U.S. District Courts, and various state courts. He has authored and co-authored numerous influential legal publications, including widely used guides on South Carolina torts and insurance law. He has been an active lecturer on litigation, tort reform, and regulatory law.

Mr. Finkel has held leadership roles in the South Carolina legal community, including past president of the South Carolina Association for Justice, chairman of the Insurance, Negligence and Workers Compensation Section of the South Carolina Bar, and member of the Bar’s Board of Governors and House of Delegates. He has also served as a Special Judge and is a certified Circuit Court Arbitrator.

Gerald M. Finkel is a long-standing member of the American Law Institute, where he has contributed to key Restatement projects in torts and insurance law. His influence extends to property rights, insurance litigation, and judicial education, making him a respected voice in South Carolina and beyond.
