David M. Carter

David M. Carter is a senior partner and co-founder of Carter, DeLuca & Farrell LLP in Melville, New York. His practice covers intellectual property law, including prosecution and litigation of patents, trademarks, and copyrights. Mr. Carter also advises clients on licensing, trade secret protection, and related IP matters. He is presently focused on patent prosecution for clients building portfolios involving medical and surgical devices.

Mr. Carter earned his J.D. from St. John’s University School of Law in 1984. He attended the United States Military Academy at West Point and received a B.S. in Physics, cum laude, from the New York Institute of Technology in 1980. His background in science and technology supports his ability to understand technical inventions, evaluate patent issues, and guide clients through protection strategies.

Mr. Carter has worked with clients on a wide range of IP matters, from protecting products to designing portfolio strategies. His experience includes patent prosecution, IP litigation, licensing, trade secret counseling, and advice related to product development. He is admitted in New York, before several federal courts, before the Supreme Court of the United States, and before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

David M. Carter is recognized for analytical, detail-oriented guidance in intellectual property matters that require technical understanding and practical legal judgment. He is a member of the New York Intellectual Property Law Association and the American Intellectual Property Law Association. He has also served as a director for the Ultrasound Industry Association, Medical Division, and on the Board of Directors of the SUNY Farmingdale Foundation.
