Marty earned a B.S. in Chemical Engineering and Chemistry from Purdue University in 1986. He later received a J.D., magna cum laude, from the University of Toledo College of Law in 1991. His educational background combines technical and legal knowledge, allowing him to work effectively on matters involving advanced technologies, scientific innovations, and intellectual property rights.

Marty handles patent and trademark prosecution in both the United States and foreign jurisdictions. His experience also includes trademark clearance, patent opinions involving freedom-to-practice and validity issues, intellectual property due diligence, and the preparation and negotiation of commercial agreements. He regularly advises clients on licensing matters involving software, trademarks, and other forms of intellectual property.

Marty has extensive courtroom and administrative experience. He has appeared before federal courts throughout the United States, including the Supreme Court of the United States. His practice also includes matters before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board and the Patent Trial and Appeal Board at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Through these representations, he has helped clients address disputes and protect important business interests.

Marty’s technical experience strengthens his legal work. Before practicing law, he worked as a process engineer at a large oil refinery. He also served as chief operating officer and in-house counsel for a technology company. His intellectual property practice spans areas such as medical devices, chemistry, and pharmaceuticals, giving clients practical guidance informed by both legal and industry knowledge.
