About
Carl A. McMahan is a seasoned personal injury lawyer who has spent decades representing people harmed by negligence and unsafe conduct in civil courts. His practice focuses on serious injury, medical malpractice, wrongful death, and complex liability claims. Through determined advocacy, he works to help injured individuals and families seek justice.
Carl attended San Diego State University and earned a B.A. Degree, with honors, in 1976. After completing his undergraduate studies, he later enrolled at the University of Pacific, McGeorge School of Law. There, he completed his legal training and graduated with a Juris Doctorate in 1982. His education built the foundation for litigation practice.
Carl spent two years working as a ski instructor in Vail, Colorado, before entering the legal field. In 1983, he began practicing law in Los Angeles, where he handled defense work for physicians and hospitals. This early experience gave him practical insight into medical negligence claims and courtroom litigation strategy.
Carl later shifted his focus toward representing injured plaintiffs and victims. During this period, he worked closely with renowned trial lawyer David M. Harney, who served as his mentor for nearly a decade. Under that guidance, Carl refined his courtroom approach and deepened his understanding of medical malpractice litigation and advocacy skills.
Carl has tried more than 90 civil jury trials to verdict while also handling many arbitrations and mediations. His cases often involve medical malpractice, elder abuse, governmental tort liability, products liability, general liability, and wrongful death. Through these matters, he has recovered millions for injured clients and their families seeking accountability.
Carl has earned recognition within the legal community for his trial work. He holds an AV Preeminent rating by Martindale Hubbell and has been named among the Top 25 Medical Malpractice Plaintiffs Trial Lawyers by The National Trial Lawyer. He is also recognized by Los Angeles Magazine as a “Super Lawyer” in plaintiff Medical Malpractice 2006-Present.
Carl A. McMahan has also been a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA) since 1993, reflecting his long commitment to courtroom excellence.
