Brett A. Appelman

Brett A. Appelman is the founder of Appelman Law LLC and a dedicated criminal defense attorney representing clients across Illinois. Since opening his firm in 2007, he has focused on protecting the rights of individuals accused of crimes, providing strategic, high-level defense in misdemeanor, felony, and complex criminal matters.

Brett earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Wisconsin after completing his undergraduate studies at the University of Michigan. He also holds a master’s degree in forensic psychology from John Jay College of Criminal Justice, giving him advanced insight into behavioral health issues that often arise in criminal defense cases.

Brett began his legal career as an Assistant Public Defender in Kane County, Illinois. In that role, he defended hundreds of clients charged with DUI, driving offenses, and misdemeanors, gaining substantial trial experience and developing a deep understanding of courtroom advocacy and effective defense strategy.

While serving with the Public Defender’s Office, Brett also acted as defense counsel on the board of Kane County’s Treatment Alternative Court, a specialized mental health court. This experience strengthened his ability to advocate for clients whose cases involve psychological, treatment-based, or alternative sentencing considerations.

In private practice, Brett personally handles serious criminal cases, including attempted murder, aggravated sexual assault, kidnapping, armed robbery, felony drug offenses, and repeat DUI charges. He has earned recognition from Super Lawyers for his professional excellence. He has achieved significant trial victories, including a not-guilty-by-reason-of-insanity verdict in a major felony case.

In addition to criminal defense, Brett A. Appelman’s practice includes civil litigation, including landlord-tenant evictions and small claims cases. Through disciplined preparation and client-focused representation, he helps individuals navigate challenging legal situations while protecting their rights, freedoms, and futures.
