Brenna Bird serves as Iowa’s Attorney General, marking a historic milestone as the first Republican to hold the office since 1979. Her tenure reflects a steadfast commitment to upholding justice and protecting the people of Iowa. Before taking office in January 2023, she gained extensive courtroom experience and established a reputation for fair and determined advocacy.
Brenna began her academic journey at Drake University, earning her undergraduate degree before completing her J.D. at the University of Chicago Law School. While in law school, she served as symposium editor of the institution’s law journal and assisted entrepreneurs on Chicago’s South Side in launching new businesses—an early demonstration of her drive to support local communities.
Brenna built her career through years of dedicated public service and legal practice. She spent six years as a prosecutor, first as the Fremont County Attorney and later as the Guthrie County Attorney. Her peers recognized her leadership, electing her to serve as President of the Iowa County Attorney Association. Her professional experience also includes roles within the Iowa Governor’s Office, the U.S. House of Representatives, and as an adjunct professor at the University of Iowa College of Law, where she shared her knowledge with future attorneys.
