About
Alexa M. Johnston is a Partner in Klarquist’s Portland office whose practice covers intellectual property law, with a primary focus on patent preparation and prosecution. She also counsels clients on trademark matters. Her work serves clients in mechanical and electromechanical devices, medical devices, laboratory and diagnostic equipment, manufacturing systems, and consumer products. She is admitted in Oregon and registered to practice before the US Patent and Trademark Office.
Johnston earned a J.D., magna cum laude, from Case Western Reserve University School of Law and a B.S. in Bioengineering from Oregon State University. During law school, she earned several CALI Excellence for the Future Awards and served as a Justice Joseph Story Intellectual Property Law Fellow. Her engineering education provides a technical foundation for evaluating inventions, understanding product systems, and communicating complex technology in patent and trademark matters.
Johnston worked as a patent intern at NASA Glenn Research Center and joined Klarquist first as a summer associate before becoming a lawyer at the firm. Before law school, she gained engineering experience with a chemical resins company and a winery, where she worked on projects involving production and mechanical-process efficiency. Her current practice applies that technical background to patent applications, intellectual property counseling, and trademark work for clients across engineering, medical, chemical, and consumer-product fields.
Alexa M. Johnston became a Klarquist partner in 2025 after building a practice that combines legal analysis with practical engineering knowledge. Her academic honors and technical experience support work involving detailed patent specifications, prosecution strategy, and client counseling. She helps inventors and businesses protect technology and brands by understanding both the legal requirements of intellectual property protection and the underlying products, processes, and commercial goals that shape each matter.
