Alan Wilson

Alan Wilson serves as South Carolina’s 51st Attorney General, first elected in 2010 and re-elected in 2014. Since taking office, he has emphasized protecting families, ensuring public safety, and safeguarding citizens’ freedoms. His leadership brings together law enforcement agencies and advocacy groups to strengthen the state’s legal and justice systems.

Alan earned his undergraduate degree from Francis Marion University before obtaining his Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina School of Law. Shortly after completing his studies, he joined the National Guard, where he served in Iraq, leading troops in combat and earning the Combat Action Badge for bravery under enemy fire. He continues his service as a lieutenant colonel in the Judge Advocate General Corps, providing legal support for soldiers.

Alan began his legal career under the mentorship of Judge Marc H. Westbrook before working as an assistant solicitor and later as an assistant attorney general. His earlier roles in the Attorney General’s Office under Charlie Condon and Henry McMaster provided valuable experience in prosecution and legal administration. Before his election, he also practiced privately, broadening his expertise across multiple legal areas.

Alan has worked to make South Carolina safer by advancing key legislation, including the Ashley Hall bill and Emma’s Law, and by strengthening human trafficking statutes through the formation of the state’s Human Trafficking Task Force. Under his leadership, the office manages thousands of cases annually, handling matters from criminal prosecution to constitutional defense.

Alan Wilson is recognized nationally for his steadfast defense of the Constitution and state sovereignty. He has represented South Carolina in major multi-state legal challenges involving healthcare, environmental regulations, and economic rights. In 2013, his peers elected him chairman of the Republican Attorneys General Association, reflecting his strong leadership and commitment to justice, integrity, and public service.
