About
Tyler J. Smith is a managing partner of Libby O’Brien Kingsley & Champion, LLC, whose practice focuses on criminal defense, employment law, civil litigation, and appellate advocacy. Since joining the firm as an associate in 2012, he has represented individuals, businesses, and professionals in a wide range of legal matters. He became a partner in 2018 and has built a strong record in state and federal courts. His work includes felony and misdemeanor defense, workplace disputes, and complex litigation. Clients value his preparation, courtroom skill, and guidance.
Tyler earned a B.S. in Computer Science with a Minor in Mathematics from the University of Southern Maine. He later received a J.D. from Roger Williams University School of Law. These academic experiences provided strong training in analytical thinking, research, and problem solving. His background in technology and law supports detailed case analysis and careful review of evidence. He applies that knowledge to litigation, appeals, criminal defense, employment matters, and other legal disputes across jurisdictions and forums for many clients alike.
Tyler has developed significant experience in criminal defense, including operating under the influence cases after completing specialized NHTSA training in detection and field sobriety testing. He has secured acquittals in felony and misdemeanor matters, challenged evidence, and achieved favorable outcomes through motions and negotiation. He also handles wrongful termination, discrimination, wage disputes, defamation, municipal liability, and whistleblower claims. His experience in employment and civil litigation helps clients address complex legal challenges with confidence and informed decision making throughout each case.
Tyler J. Smith is also an active appellate advocate who regularly appears before appellate courts and prepares persuasive legal arguments. He has argued before the Maine Supreme Judicial Court and the First Circuit on numerous occasions. In 2024, he was appointed to the Maine Supreme Judicial Court’s Advisory Committee on Appellate Procedure. He has authored amicus briefs supporting criminal defense issues and continues to help clients protect their rights, resolve disputes, and pursue fair outcomes through advocacy, strategy, and experience.
