About
Travis J. Benson is a shareholder whose practice focuses on estate planning, trusts, asset protection, and business succession planning. He helps families develop plans designed to reduce tax liability and prepares trusts, wills, and business succession documents to carry out those plans. He also advises clients who want to use South Dakota’s trust and asset protection laws. His work includes farmers, ranchers, closely held business owners, and families planning for long-term continuity and wealth transfer.
Travis earned a J.D. from the University of Nebraska College of Law and completed his undergraduate studies at Augustana University. His legal education supports work involving estate planning, taxation, trusts, business succession, and asset protection. He is also a Certified Farm Succession Coordinator through the International Farm Transition Network, training that helps him guide agricultural families through the legal, financial, and family issues that can arise when transferring a farm or ranch to the next generation.
Travis works closely with farm and ranch families and owners of closely held businesses on succession planning and transition strategies. He grew up on a grain and hog farm near Trent, South Dakota, giving him practical familiarity with the concerns that often accompany agricultural succession. Earlier in his career, he served as Legal Counsel, Lobbyist, and Director of the Office of Marriage, Family & Respect Life for the Diocese of Sioux Falls, where he addressed legal, fiscal, policy, and family matters.
Travis J. Benson is licensed to practice in South Dakota, Minnesota, and Nebraska. He belongs to the South Dakota State Bar Association, Minnesota State Bar Association, Nebraska State Bar Association, Sioux Falls Estate Planning Council, Thomas More Society, and Greater Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce. He also presents to organizations on estate planning, business succession, trusts, and asset protection. His practice reflects a practical, planning-focused approach to helping families and business owners preserve assets, prepare for transitions, and reduce future uncertainty.
