Travis H. Eckley is a member of Spilman Thomas & Battle in Charleston, West Virginia, and co-chair of the firm’s Real Estate Group. His practice focuses on mineral, commercial, and residential real estate law. Eckley advises clients on purchase and sale agreements, leases, easements, licenses, rights-of-way, surface damage agreements, land use arrangements, financing, and other property-related transactions. He also handles real estate disputes and matters involving energy and natural resource development.
Eckley earned his J.D. from West Virginia University College of Law in 2007 after receiving a B.A. from Rhodes College in 2004. He later earned an LL.M. in Real Estate Law from The Center for Real Estate Law at the University of Illinois Chicago John Marshall Law School in 2008. His specialized education supports his work on title, development, financing, leasing, and complex ownership issues involving commercial, residential, mineral, and energy-related property.
Eckley’s experience includes serving as counsel for major shopping center developments, examining coal, oil, and gas titles, and advising renewable energy and natural resource companies on large-scale property rights. He has represented clients in wind energy projects, timber transactions exceeding one million acres, shale and coalbed methane development, secured lending matters, and an acquisition involving approximately 130,000 mineral acres. He also previously served as in-house counsel on a loan to a publicly traded oil and gas company.
Travis H. Eckley has been recognized by Chambers USA for Real Estate Law and listed in The Best Lawyers in America for Real Estate Law. He is a member of the West Virginia State Bar’s Real Estate, Zoning and Land Use Committee and the American Association of Professional Landmen. Eckley also serves as Vice Chancellor of the Episcopal Diocese of West Virginia and has volunteered with Legal Aid of West Virginia and Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Central West Virginia.
