Torris J. Butterfield

Torris J. Butterfield is an accomplished trial attorney focused on criminal defense and personal injury. He has led hundreds of complex cases, including felony, juvenile, and wrongful death matters. Mr. Butterfield has earned a reputation as a relentless advocate in the courtroom, with a proven record in both state and federal courts across Georgia.

Torris began his academic journey at Fort Valley State College, earning high honors, including Dean’s List every term from 1989 to 1993. He graduated summa cum laude in 1993. He then earned his Juris Doctor from Mercer University School of Law, where classmates voted him “The Best Person to Represent You in a Criminal Case,” reflecting his early leadership and courtroom skill.

Torris launched his legal career as an Assistant Public Defender in Fulton County. Rising to the role of Senior Trial Attorney, he was lead counsel in major felonies and complex multi-defendant cases. His responsibilities spanned from discovery and investigation to trial and appeals in Georgia’s superior and appellate courts.

Since 1997, Torris has handled more than 1,400 criminal cases and over 500 juvenile matters. Among those, he has tried 19 murder cases to verdict, serving as lead counsel in 15, and secured not guilty outcomes in the majority. His courtroom skills have translated into success in personal injury litigation, especially against insurance companies.

Torris prepares thoroughly for trial by visiting scenes, reviewing every record, and interviewing witnesses. He is recognized for his sharp attention to detail and dedication to telling each client’s story effectively to a jury. His deep trial experience sets him apart in both criminal defense and injury law.

Torris J. Butterfield is a member of the State Bar of Georgia, Georgia Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and has been admitted to multiple U.S. District and Appeals Courts. Named a “Rising Star” in Super Lawyers Magazine in 2009, Torris continues to serve Georgia clients with skill, strategy, and integrity.
