Thomas G. Hungar has established himself as one of the nation’s most respected appellate attorneys, known for his extensive work before the Supreme Court of the United States and other courts nationwide. Over his career, he has argued 28 Supreme Court cases, shaping legal precedent in matters of patent, antitrust, securities, and environmental law.

Thomas began his academic journey at Willamette University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree magna cum laude in mathematics/computer science and economics in 1984. He went on to earn his Juris Doctor from Yale University in 1987, where he served as a Senior Editor of the Yale Law & Policy Review.

Thomas’s career includes senior government service. He was an Assistant to the Solicitor General of the United States, and later, a Deputy Solicitor General, where he directed appellate litigation on complex business-related issues. From 2016 to 2019, he served as General Counsel to the U.S. House of Representatives, advising on litigation and congressional investigations.

Thomas has argued and briefed high-profile cases involving patent law, securities fraud, class actions, antitrust, and constitutional law. Notable cases include KSR Int’l Co. v. Teleflex Inc., Leegin Creative Leather Prods., Inc. v. PSKS, Inc., and National Cable & Telecom. Ass’n v. Brand X Internet Servs. His work has had a lasting impact across multiple areas of law and industry sectors.

Thomas G. Hungar remains widely regarded for his skillful appellate practice, deep legal insight, and consistent record of success in high-stakes disputes. Thomas has been honored with the John Marshall Award for Outstanding Legal Achievement for his contributions in patent law matters before the Supreme Court. He has also been recognized by Benchmark Litigation as a “Litigation Star” and has received national acknowledgment from Chambers USA, Best Lawyers in America, and The Legal 500. A Fellow of the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers, he is also a sought-after lecturer on appellate advocacy.
