Taras A. Gracey is a Chicago-based trial lawyer with more than 25 years of courtroom experience. His practice centers on intellectual property law disputes, particularly patent litigation involving pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, computer technology, chipsets, and display systems. He represents both patent owners and companies accused of infringement in complex cases before federal trial and appellate courts.
Mr. Gracey earned a B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1991 and a J.D. from Duke University School of Law in 1995. He was admitted to the Illinois Bar in 1995. His court admissions include the US District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, the US Courts of Appeals for the Seventh and Federal Circuits, and the US Supreme Court.
Mr. Gracey has tried jury and bench cases and handled numerous appeals. His litigation work has reached federal courts in California, Delaware, Illinois, New Jersey, New York, and Texas. He also has experience with inter partes review proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board, allowing him to address patent validity issues in both court and administrative settings.
Mr. Gracey includes helping secure a jury verdict exceeding $20 million for a patent owner and obtaining a $35 million settlement on the final day of another trial in his technology litigation record. Gracey has also first-chaired pharmaceutical cases brought under the Hatch-Waxman framework. Earlier in his career, he participated in the team that successfully challenged Eli Lilly’s patent covering Prozac.
